The report comes from a London-based information provider Jeff Lin, who is an analyst at IHS Markit. He claims that Apple has quietly been working on a foldable 5G iPad, according to a report in 9to5Mac. According to 9to5Mac, “The product would apparently feature MacBook sized screens, which isn’t too much of a stretch given that the iPad Pro already tops out in a 12.9-inch size. However, it is easy to imagine how an iPad mini-sized product that could unfold to 13 or 15-inch screen would be compelling.” In addition to this, the analyst has also said that the foldable iPad would also come with support for 5G cellular radios that will enable fast mobile internet browsing. We should mention that as of now, the company does not have any devices in its lineup that supports 5G connectivity. This year, Apple is expected to launch three iPhone models. While Apple has still not launched its 5G device, a number of its competitors like Samsung have already announced their 5G offerings. But then, Apple has never really committed to being the first in the industry. Instead, it has mostly first seen how people react to certain new technology and then launches its own offering. The strategy seems to work for the Cupertino-based technology company too.
Another reason for the delay was the company’s legal battle with Qualcomm. Since it is the only chipmaker that is providing 5G-enabled chipsets till now, Apple could not opt for it without paying the amount it owned as a part of the legal case over copyright infringements. It did try to get Intel and MediaTek make 5G chipsets for it, but then, that didn’t work out the way Apple had intended. Now that Apple and Qualcomm have agreed to a settlement, the company is free to have a fresh contract with the chipmaker and hence, it will be able to procure 5G chipsets from the company soon. So, Apple fans and loyalists may not have to wait for too long before they get to use 5G-enabled iPhones and iPads and this latest report about the foldable 5G iPad may be true.
